Where to Surf on Maui

When you’re on an island in the middle of the ocean, there’s a good chance for surfing. In fact, Maui is famous for having some of the world’s largest waves, however, we also have some of the best waves for beginners too.  And what better place to start your surfing journey than the warm waters of Maui! Wether you are looking to learn or just interested in spectating, this guide will give you a quick breakdown of some of the popular surf spots on Maui.

But first, a couple tips; be mindful of conditions before you head out. The ocean is vastly unpredictable and can be dangerous even for skillful swimmers. Check conditions on Surfline to get an idea of what the swell could be like, but also be cautious of rocks and reefs. There is a frequently used expression here in Hawaii, “when in doubt, don’t go out.” Secondly, as a visitor, it is important to respect the locals and to familiarize yourself with surfing etiquette. Most experienced surfers understand the surfer closest to the peak has precedence over the wave. However, when surfing a spot for the first time it’s also best to ease your way into the lineup. You don’t want to head straight to the peak and start jockeying for waves. Yield to the locals and over time you will get your fair share.

Maui surf spots for beginners

For Beginner Surfers:

West Maui

Kaanapali Beach - mostly catering to guests staying at one of the beachside mega resorts, there is a surf school that offers lessons and gear rental right from the beach. Typically a good spot for beginners, but on a big south swell this wave becomes quite popular with locals looking to shred the long rippable walls.

South Maui

The Cove at Kalama Beach Park - A great place to learn for the visitor with absolutely no surfing experience. The waves here are typically small and gentle.

For Advanced Surfers:

Unless you are an expert surfer, the following surf spots are best left for spectating only:

Ho’okipa Beach - is world famous for windsurfing and kitesurfing. In the winter months, the waves can get huge! The parking lot on the east side of the beach serves a great spot to view surfers taking on these huge open ocean swells from the safety of the cliff.

Jaws (Pe’ahi Beach) one of the world’s premier big wave destinations, this place turns on a few times a year, and is home to the annual Jaws Big Wave Challenge surf competition, where surfers from around the world compete to catch the biggest wave. Waves up to 100 feet have been ridden here!

Honolua Bay- a picture perfect right hand pointbreak conveniently protected from the whipping tradewinds, the reef under this majestic bay bends large winter North West swells into incredible tubes for daring surfers to enjoy. There is a great lookout point to watch the waves directly below.

Maalaea Harbor - while very rare, every once in a while this sleeping beauty will awake and serve up some of the fastest waves in the world. Known locally as “Freight Trains” because of the power and speed.
