Where to Snorkel on Maui

Ever wonder what it would be like to swim beside giant sea turtles (honu) or countless colorful fish? Swim underwater, closer than you’ve ever been to these amazing creatures without disturbing them. There is an entirely new world under the surface, and Maui has some of the clearest waters to show you. See how many different species of butterfly fish you can spot, or watch out for Hawaii’s state fish, Humuhumunukunukuapua’a (say that twice!) or the Picasso Triggerfish, who just might try to chase you away from their nest if you get too close.

Let’s dive right in! Check out some of our favorite spots for snorkeling below:

Honolua Bay

If the conditions are right and the isn’t a swell, Honolua Bay has some of the absolute best snorkeling Maui has to offer. Located on the west side just north of Lahaina, you won’t find sandy beaches here, but a short jungle covered walk down to a rocky coastline will deliver you to the crystal cove that is picture-perfect for swimming with several creatures.

Kamaole Beaches I, II, III

Any of these three beaches which stretch along the Kihei shoreline are wonderful choices for snorkeling. They are family-friendly areas with accessible bathrooms and calm, shallow waters, but not too far from excellent hot spots for lunch, drinks, or shopping! This area is also accessible by bus, with golden beaches all along the drive, should you choose to make it. It’s also not intimidating to enter the water here, as it’s all sandy!

Molokini Crater

If you want the best of the best, catch a boat to the world famous Molokini Crater. This crescent shaped islet is only accessible by boat, and there are several companies who offer tours there from Wailea and Makena.

What Can You See?

Beautiful coral reef, sea turtles, fish including but not limited to: Moorish idol, peacock groupers, butterflyfish, triggerfish, goatfish, parrotfish, surgeonfish, yellow tang, and occasionally a shark, manta ray or octopus!

We can’t wait to have you experience Maui for yourself!
