Whale Watching on Maui
If you visit Maui during the months of November to March, you won’t be the only majestic creature here! Maui is the best Hawaiian island for whale watching! January and February are the perfect months to go if you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of humpback whales (“Koholas” in Hawaiian).
The North Pacific humpback whales migrate south every year for warmer waters to breed and give birth. One of the largest whale species in the world, they can live up to an average of 50 years old and weigh up to 80,000 pounds. The humpback whale is the most popular whale sighted in Hawaii and on the island of Maui.
Many visitors can even spot the whales from shore. The drive to Lahaina on Honoapiilani Highway is right along the water, and I’ve seen a few from the bus drive there. McGregor Point, Kaanapali, and Kihei all are great spots as well if you’d rather try to see the view from land. The best place to see whales are the waters between Maui, Lanai, and Kaho'olawe. Called the “Maui Nui Basin,” this is a protected area for whales and where most of them travel to breed. You can find more information on the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary here. The easiest way to spot whales is to look first for the spray above water, as they come to the surface to breathe. Breaches or tail slaps are also common.
Of course, the ideal manner in which to see whales up close is to be on a boat. Many companies offer tours of different durations, often leaving from Maalaea Harbor. There is no “best” time to go for whale activity, but you may want to plan your tour according to when it would be the best with the sunlight for your photos.
As a reminder, it is absolutely illegal to approach these whales as they are federally protected. Please keep at a minimum of 100 yards away, regardless if you are swimming, boating, kayaking, or flying a drone or any other means.
