The Story of Howzit Hostels

Howzit Hostels, a beloved spot in Hilo, Hawaii, is more than just a place to stay; it’s a hub of community, adventure, and the spirit of aloha. The hostel was founded by a group of friends who shared a passion for travel and a vision for creating a unique lodging experience for all travelers. Inspired by their own backpacking trips and experiences with hostels around the world, they wanted to offer travelers a place that would go beyond typical accommodations, fostering connections and immersing guests in the local culture.

The name “Howzit” is a nod to the Hawaiian and Pidgin greeting that translates to “How’s it going?”—a warm, casual way to say hello that reflects the welcoming and laid-back vibe of the islands. The founders wanted Howzit Hostels to embody - this sense of friendliness and inclusivity, where guests could feel at home regardless of where they came from or how long they planned to stay. With this in mind, they designed the hostel to have open, communal spaces for travelers to connect, share stories, and make memories together.

Howzit Hostels has become a go-to spot for adventurous travelers looking to explore either their Maui or Hilo location. Over time, Howzit Hostels has grown to become a vibrant part of the Hawaiian community, embracing its role not just as a place to stay, but as a launching point for exploration and a true sense of belonging.

Come discover why Howzit Hostels was voted the #1 Youth Hostel in North America. Upon arrival and throughout your stay, Howzit’s team of Aloha Ambassadors will greet you with a smile and plenty of Aloha!
