Maui attracts travelers from all over the world with its breathtaking scenery and vibrant culture. But, beyond the gorgeous beaches and lush landscapes lies another must-experience aspect of the island: its abundance of exotic fruits!

From the hills of Upcountry to the sun-kissed shores of its coastline, Maui‘s landscape is truly one of a kind! Maui’s multiple climates and terrains allow for an astonishing variety of exotic fruits to flourish throughout the year. If you think you love papaya on the mainland, just wait until you try a locally grown papaya from Maui. Join us on a flavor adventure like no other as we explore the fruits of paradise and uncover the seasonal delights that you can’t miss on your trip to the islands!

Winter:

Nov - Feb

As winter unfolds on Maui, orchards come alive with an array of fruits.

One of the stars of the season is the luscious avocado. Creamy and nutrient-rich, avocados thrive in Maui's moderate temperatures. Spread it on toast or add it to salads for a healthy treat.

Another winter delight is the tangy tangerine. Bursting with citrusy goodness, these easy-to-peel fruits make for refreshing snacks to pack on hikes and beach days!

Spring:

March - May

With the arrival of spring, Maui's fruit offerings continue to flourish.

One of the most anticipated arrivals is the succulent mango. Sweet and juicy, Maui mangoes are a true tropical delight. Enjoy them fresh, or blend them into smoothies for a taste of paradise. Not to brag, but we might even have a massive mango tree in the backyard of the hostel ;)

Spring is also the season of lychee. Lychee has a bright floral flavor and fragrant aroma. Peel away the pink exterior to reveal the sweet white fruit within; a perfect example of nature’s candy!

Summer:

June - August

As temperatures rise, so does the abundance of fruits on the island.

Pineapple takes center stage during Maui's sunny summers. Nothing compares to the sweet, tangy flavor of a ripe Maui Gold pineapple, freshly harvested from the fields.

Another summer favorite is the tropical papaya, with its vibrant orange flesh and buttery texture. Start your day with a bowl of papaya topped with a squeeze of lime for a healthy, refreshing breakfast!

Fall:

Sept - Oct

As the year transitions into fall, Maui continues to offer a bounty of fruits.

One standout is the passion fruit, also known as liliko'i in Hawaiian. Bursting with tart-sweet flavor, liliko'i packs a punch like no other! Scoop out the seeds and enjoy them on their own or drizzle them over yogurt or an açaí bowl. On our weekly trips to Iao Valley, you might be lucky enough to pick some yourself!

Fall also brings the season of the sweet and tart guava. Fresh guava is delicious on it’s own or check out Maui’s farmer’s markets for locally-made guava jam!

Year-Round Delights

While Maui's fruit calendar follows seasonal rhythms, some treats are available year-round.

Coconut, with its hearty meat and hydrating water, is a staple in many island dishes. Whether grated, shredded, or sipped straight from the shell, coconut adds a classic tropical touch to any meal. We’re coconuts for coconuts here at Howzit!

Bananas thrive in Maui's warm climate offering local businesses like Aunty Sandy’s on the Road to Hana to sell arguably the best banana bread in the world. Or try a locally grown apple banana for a tangy fusion of flavors!

As we come to the end of our journey through Maui's seasonal fruit bounty, one thing is clear – the island's flavors are as diverse as its landscapes. Whether you're biting into a ripe mango after a hike through the lava fields or sipping on freshly squeezed pineapple juice on the beach, Maui's fruits are a true taste of paradise. Next time you find yourself on Maui, be sure to support local and indulge in the seasonal delights that await!
